What Is A Sinus Lift (Lifting Of The Sinus Membrane) ?

WHAT IS A SINUS LIFT OPERATION?

Following the loss of molar teeth in the posterior region of the upper jaw, a serious loss in bone height due to osteolysis usually occurs at areas where teeth are missing. In order to provide tooth function in the area through dental implants, the bone height at these spots need to be recovered. The surgical process for doing so is referred to as Sinus Lifting (heightening of the sinus membrane). The sinus lift operation has been a surgical procedure practiced frequently by maxillofacial surgeons even before dental implant surgery was developed.

HOW IS THE SINUS LIFT OPERATION CARRIED OUT?
The sinus lift operation usually takes place under local anesthesia and in minor operating theater conditions. Following the local anesthesia, the tooth gums are lifted at full thickness in order to reach the sinus lateral wall. The bone at the sinus lateral wall is then lifted via bone osteotomes or drilling tools, enabling access to the sinus membrane. The sinus membrane is then raised up in order to create a space for placing the graft (bone powder) into. This area is filled with graft (bone powder), thus providing the necessary bone height for implants to be placed into. The area is eventually stitched up.

The bone powder used within the sinus lift operation may be obtained from the patient's own bone structure while it is also possible to use synthetic grafts obtained from external resources for this purpose. In case the bone powder will be obtained from the patient's own system, the source is usually the ilia or the tibia. The process of obtaining grafts from the patient's tibia bone takes place under local anesthesia and in minor operating theater conditions. Afterwards, the patient is discharged from medical care within the same day. Obtaining graft (bone powder) from the patient himself offers important advantages in that, the patient does not need to pay extra costs for graft when he acts as a donor for himself. Additionally, research suggests that graft that the healing rate for patients that use grafts obtained from their own bodies seems to be higher. The greatest disadvantage of obtaining graft (bone powder) from the patient himself is the necessity of having to carry out a second surgical operation.

HOW IS THE POST-OPERATIVE CARE FOR SINUS LIFT?
Following the operation, patients are usually administered penicillin class antibiotics, anti-inflammatory mouthwash, painkillers and antihistaminic drugs. The patient should avoid smoking, as well as sneezing or coughing (at least keep his mouth open when forced to do so) for a period of 10 days after the operation. The patient is also advised not to blow his nose harshly or take water into his nose. The patient may start brushing his teeth after 24 hours has passed.

WHAT KIND OF COMPLICATIONS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH SINUS LIFT?
- The loss of the graft
- Infections
- Sinusitis
- The forming of a fistula between the oral cavity and the sinus.
- İmplan yerleştirildikten sonra implantların kaybedilmesi

How much time needs to pass after a Sinus Lift before I can I have my implant surgeries carried out?
The patient generally needs to wait 6 months in order to establish the full development of the bone structure in the area. The implants may be placed after 6 months has passed.
